To pick the runner off of second base with (shortstop or second baseman).
To catch the runner that drops his head and leads off unprepared.
To maintain the runner and keep him from getting a good lead at second base.
SHORTSTOP OR SECOND BASEMAN
Give the sign to the pitcher and make sure that he gives you an answer. If
not, call time and go in and tell him to watch you. Know the pickoff move
of the pitcher, and how quick he is to second base. That determines the
distance you can get from second base. Time the pitcher knowing that when
his hands start to come together (about his chest) he is going to turn and
throw the ball to second base if there is a play. If there is not going to
be an out, make sure and keep the ball from going into center field.
Alert
the outfield with a sign that you're putting a pickoff play on so they can
backup the play. For this play to work, the shortstop and the second
baseman have to constantly be "working" the runner so that the look is the
same all the time. Not only are we trying to beat the runner, but we are
also setting up the third base coach. Try to communicate often during the
game with the pitcher so he is aware of your presence and will look for
plays you put on.
OUTFIELDERS
You must be aware of whenever a pickoff attempt is going to be made by an
infielder. It is your responsibility to get the sign and then be on a full
sprint when the pitcher turns to throw the ball to the base. This includes
all outfielders. There is a chance that you may stop the ball or be
involved in a rundown play.
