To pick off the runner at second base (shortstop or second baseman).
To prevent the runner from taking a big lead.
PITCHER'S KEYS
Watch the shortstop or second baseman to see if he points to his eye.
If the shortstop does, give him time to "set" the play up.
If he fakes
the runner and goes straight back, there probably will be no pickoff
attempt. If he fakes and then "angles" to the runner's left shoulder, he
is probably going to give the glove and go to second base for the pickoff.
The key is to read the angle that the shortstop takes.. The pitcher looks
for "daylight" between the shortstop and the runner. Don't force this play
or throw if there is no real chance!
SHORTSTOP AND SECOND BASE KEYS
Communication with the pitcher verbally and non-verbally during the game
so that he is aware of your presence and you are able to put on the pickoff
plays when the time is right.
Set up the runner and the third base coach by faking and maintaining the
runner on a consistent basis.
Shortstop makes sure to use the angle after the fake to decide whether
to pick or not. If the shortstop retreats straight back, then there will
probably not be a pickoff play; if the shortstop angles toward the base,
then the shortstop will give the open glove to start the pickoff play.
Second baseman will give the open hand as the key to start the pickoff
attempt.
