SITUATION
-
Runners at First and Second With No Outs
OBJECTIVE
- To get an out at third base.
- To keep the runner close to second base.
- To get an out at first base if the play is not at third base.
PITCHER
Comes set looking at second base, keying off of the shortstop. Waits for
daylight or two steps from the shortstop before delivering the ball to
the plate. Must throw a strike with good stuff and charge straight to
home. Pick-off overrides the play, possible one-time shot.
CATCHER
Reads the bunt and the position of the runners. Knows the fielding ability
of the pitcher. Calls out loudly the # of base where the play is to be
made. Makes a firm decision. Remember, if the play is not there, get an
out!
FIRST BASEMAN
Plays two steps in on the grass and begins slowly creeping until the
shortstop makes the break for third base; then charges to the home plate
area under control to field the bunt and make the play at third base.
Sets body to throw to third base and adjusts back to first base if there is
no play. Is prepared if the hitter doesn't square or uses the slash play.
SECOND BASEMAN
Plays at double play depth. Reads the hitter's bat and breaks when the
hitter squares to bunt the ball at an angle that protects against the slash
bunt. Cover first base.
THIRD BASEMAN
Plays two steps on the grass with his body angled toward the runner.
Begins creeping slowly toward the plate until the shortstop commits to
third base; then charges under control to home and fields the bunt with
his body turned and ready to throw to third base. Looks for an out at
third, then readjusts to first base if necessary.
SHORTSTOP
Positions two steps behind the runner and off the right shoulder of the
runner. Makes a decision (according to his read of the runner) whether to
pick or go to third base. On the wheel play, go two steps off of the
runner and continue to third base where he receives a throw from the
fielder. If the hitter slashes, try and stop as soon as he reads the
slash. On the pick-off, daylight and glove will key the pitcher to throw
to second base. The pitcher does not have to throw to second base if play
isn't there. On the wheel play at third base, look for possible double
play if the bunter doesn't run hard to first base.
OUTFIELDERS
When the hitter squares to bunt, begin to creep towards the infield. When
the ball is bunted or an attempt is made to bunt, sprint to the back up
position. Get the proper angle to be in position to catch a wild throw.
Move when the hitter squares!
