SITUATION
-
Runner at First Base No Outs
OBJECTIVE
- To hold the runner close at first base.
- To pick the runner off of first base if he breaks too early.
PITCHER
Gets the sign from the first baseman. The first baseman does one of three
plays:
- Holds the runner on first base without charging.
- Takes two steps towards home plate and charges.
- Takes two steps towards home plate, then goes back for a pickoff throw.
On option #1, the pitcher
follows the sign from the catcher and executes either a throw over or goes
home with the ball. On option #2, the pitcher comes set and waits for the
first baseman to take two full strides to the plate then delivers the ball
home with good stuff, making sure to throw a strike. He then breaks
straight to home for his coverage, thinking about a possible out at second
base. On option #3, the pitcher lets the first baseman get two steps then
turns and throws a chest high toss to the first baseman. This play is not
designed to pick a runner off, only to keep the runner close. Make sure to
give a good throw!
CATCHER
Needs to know the arm and fielding ability of both the pitcher and the
infielders as well as the field conditions, the speed of the runner, the
score and the situation of the game. Must be ready to make a firm decision
by seeing the jump of the runner and how the infielders and pitcher get
into position to field. If possible, get the out at second base but don't
force it! Use a loud voice to call the play.
FIRST BASEMAN
Checks the bench and is ready to give the proper sign to the pitcher.
Executes one of the 3 options above. Makes sure of an out! If he thinks
there is an out a second base, go to first base; if he knows there is an
out at second base, get the out at second.
SECOND BASEMAN
Positioned at double play depth. When the hitter squares to bunt, take an
angle toward him that eliminates the push bunt, then go to first base and
receive the throw.
SHORTSTOP
Positioned at double play depth. When the hitter squares to bunt, hold
position until the ball is bunted, then go to second base to receive a
possible throw. On close plays, become a first baseman and stretch. On
others, be ready to execute a double play. Make sure to get to the front
of the base to receive the throw.
THIRD BASEMAN
Positioned two steps on the grass and begins to creep toward home plate.
When the pitcher delivers the ball home and the hitter turns to bunt,
charge to field the bunt and get the out at second base. Gets body into
position to throw to second base, and readjusts to first base.
PITCHER:
Covers home plate.
CATCHER:
Retrieves the ball.
FIRST BASEMAN:
Backs up the plate.
SECOND BASEMAN:
Covers second base.
SHORTSTOP:
Backs up behind the mound.
THIRD BASEMAN:
Cover third.
ALL OUTFIELDERS:
Move toward the infield area to help where needed.
