For the shortstop to pick runner off at second base.
To keep the runner close to second base.
To catch a runner that drops his head or walks off the base unprepared.
PITCHER
Gets the sign form the third baseman (no answer is necessary). Starts up
from the stretch position looking home. When the hands come together
(chest high) turns with quick feet and is ready to throw to the shortstop
breaking to the base. If there is no play, don't throw the ball! The play
is designed to keep runners from cheating and getting an extra step. Even
with no throw, you have planted some doubt in the runner and third base
coach.
FIRST BASEMAN
Make the play look like the regular bunt play, starts two steps in on the
grass and keys on the short stop's break. Show an earlier the break to
home plate to make the offense think the wheel or regular play is on. Be
ready to get back in case of a run down.
SECOND BASEMAN
Makes the play look like the regular bunt defense by lining up at double
play depth. Your responsibility is to protect against a wild throw to
second base by backing up the base as soon as the shortstop has already
make his move. Alert the outfielders that a pickoff is on with a sign of
choice.
THIRD BASEMAN
Makes the play look like the regular play by lining up two steps on the
grass angled toward second base. Once the shortstop breaks, make a fake
charge, then retreat to third base in case of a possible rundown.
SHORTSTOP
Positions as normal on a regular bunt or a wheel play. Disguises the play
and makes it look just like the others. Some pitchers are quicker than
others to second base, so you may need to cheat a step or two in order to
get there in time. It depends on the quickness of the pitcher. You must
time the pitcher so that when his hands are at the chest, you have timed it
so that you are in position to get an out at second base. If there is no
play, stop the ball! Come in front of the bag or runner and dive if
necessary to keep the ball in the infield. Alert the outfielders of the
pickoff.
OUTFIELDERS
When the bunt is in order, either watch third baseman or get sign from
shortstop and second baseman. When the pitcher starts up with his hands,
break full speed to prevent a wild throw and the base runner advancing
another base.
